George Campbell opened this establishment in 1869 on the southern side of the river. In 1879 the licensee William Walker renamed it the Sussex, but with a new owner in 1881 its original name was restored. In 1883 it was sold as a store, as its liquor licence had been declined and it was solely offering accommodation. (Information from Country Hotels display information, 2005.) Mouth of river now shingle bank. |

Friendly Bay site c. 1900 (before Holmes Wharf opened in 1907). The building with double gables is the Oamaru Boating Club shed. Name changed about 1950 to Oamaru Rowing Club (Inc). Sheds demolished c. 1960s.

Oamaru South School

Oamaru South School, from Greta Street. Tablet dedicated to Charles John Connell, former pupil of the Oamaru South school, who lost his life on 20 January 1934 trying to save two companions during a fishing trip at Long Point, near the Catlins. The memorial wall and tablet were unveiled in a public ceremony on 13 November 1934.

Chalmers, Mark Droving Sheep All Day Bay Kakanui
|
The lamb buyer Ward Thompson would mark the sheep for slaughter and then Mark Chalmers would round them up and drove them to Maheno where they would rail to Pareora. On the off season he would round up the bulls for slaughter, he would ride in a buggy while his dog did the work. Information Stan Wilson who lived at All Day Bay.
