Wedding Ensemble - Skirt and Jacket Wedding Ensemble - Skirt and Jacket
1871
A skirt and jacket. Worn in 1871 when Martha McNab married Robert Gray at Pukeuri.

A = Skirt. Brown striped taffeta, with cotton tape waistband. The material is a light chestnut with vertical stripes of dark brown flanked by gold. At the bottom is attached a 110mm wide ruffle of material which has been press pleated ( ie it has not been sewn ). At the very edge of the skirt is a burgundy cotton tape. There is one side pocket. The skirt has two metal hooks and eyes on the waist band, but that is all, there does not appear to have been any fastening. Lined with a hay coloured starched cotton.

B = Jacket. Rather long jacket, with a pulled in waist. The jacket is of the same material as the skirt, with brown velvet insets. There is an hour glass panel along the back. The collar is velvet, as are the inverted cuffs. The front panel is also velvet, a wider hour glass than the back. The front is fastened by two hooks and eyes at the collar and twelve wooden buttons. The jacket is lined with a brown cotton. The interior has a cotton tie.

The photogtraph shows the giant valve cut in to the twin water mains from the Oamaru reservoir. The junction at the foot of Warren Street converged the 18 inch and 24 inch mains into a single 3 foot water main constructed of wood encircled by iron hoops. The main, rose over the hospital hill and dropped down to the power house in Cross St. Second from the right is Mr Ike Dalmer, resident borough engineer, Mr F Black (Wellington) at the right David Nimmo, Borough Engineer. Two in from the left, at back, is Mr Jack Branthwaite (late Town Clerk) and in the group at the front is Mr Jack McNarry (blacksmith) with Mr Alex Ross to the right.

Elevated View, Oamaru - Woollen Mills Elevated View, Oamaru - Woollen Mills
1884-1942
Old and New Woollen Mills, North Oamaru. First woollen mills (Oamaru Woollen factory) opened in 1884. Safety of the buildings threatened by foreshore erosion and transfer to new site (adjacent) started in 1917. New location established by 1920. Caption information for the Oamaru Woollen Mills complied by Max Smyth (a local photographer) reads as follows: "The old mill, across the railway, commenced work in August 1883. The buildings were extended from time to time - e.g. office and warehouse 1894; worsted plant 1905. The safety of the buildings was threatened by erosion, and after the failure of various protective schemes, it was decided to shift to a new site. Starting in 1917, the transfer was carried out on a carefully planned scheme so that building, transfer of plant and demolition went on in stages. The process was virtually completed by 1920, and not a day's production was lost. Much of the old stone was used again. The former office building was left standing for many years, and the chimney stack was not felled until 1942. It is estimated about a third of the site is now in the sea."
