A cabinet photo of Robert MacDonald who was a carpenter and cabinet maker from Scotland. He built the first vinery at Kakanui and grew the first grapes cultivated in NZ. He worked as a builder in Oamaru and is recorded as having built the Star and Garter Hotel. Robert was a widower when he married Barbara Keen in 1879 in Oamaru.

A side saddle with a decorative pattern stitched in to the leather. Metal studs on the saddle have "THOS BELL SADDLER DUNEDIN". The flaps are padded with horsehair. Small metal stirrup. The name 'Chapman' is written underneath.

The first two girls, (just to the right of centre of the picture) are Winifred "Winnie" Bulleid (left) born Oamaru 19/4/1883, died 8/10/1964. Leah Elizabeth Bulleid, (right) born Oamaru 29/3/1882, died 10/11/1936. Aged around 12 - 13yrs. |

Bank of New Zealand. Built in 1865 at total cost of L3,600 including dwelling rooms. The bank moved, in 1895, into the Colonial Bank premises on the corner of Thames and Itchen Streets. (the original Tyne Street building was demolished in 1972.)

A large decorative glass apothecary jar for display in a chemist shop. Painted brown with polychrome and gold decoration and a gold lid.
Labelled as Peruv. Bark. Decorated with a crown. The jar has the painted motto "honi pense qui mal y soit" Peruvian Bark was a historical name for a remedy used to treat all forms of malaria. Originally displayed in Lanes Chemist Tees Street, Oamaru. |

Oamaru Brewery. Built in 1865 by Whitmore and Williams. Later called the Oamaru Brewery Company. Situated on the bank of the Oamaru Creek immediately behind site of J R Sewell's shop (Small Bytes Computing in 1999). For details see "Otago's Breweries Past and Present" (Leckie 1997: 129-131).
Attached to one of the prints is an original article cutting from a paper about this breweries origins: " Mr. Whitmore, who is about to establish a brewery and manufactory of aerated water, cordials, etc., has made some progress in the erection of premises beside the creek, and in sinking only a few feet for water, has been fortunate enough to find an ample supply. This water is softer than that obtained from the wells ordinarily sunk here to the depths of from 20 to 30 feet, and is expected will be found well adapt(able to) brewing." |
