The New Zealand War Service Medal. Silver. The obverse shows the uncrowned effigy of King George VI, facing left, with the legend "GEORGIUS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP." The reverse has the inscription "FOR SERVICE TO NEW ZEALAND 1939-1945" above a fern leaf. Ribbon black with white edges.

Awarded to Ivan McDonald who was in the 19th Independant Infantry Co.

The medal was struck in silver and is a disk. The obverse depicts a Trophy of Arms that incorporates a central shield bearing the Royal Coat of Arms. The reverse of the medal is smooth with a raised rim and bears the inscription "FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT" in four straight lines in the centre. The ribbon is plain crimson.

Engraved on the side is 2292 SergT. Saml. King, 70th Regt.

A sepia coloured photo showing a seated woman in a mourning dress with a voluminous skirt leaning on what appears to be a tiny casket which has flowers on it. The boy is wearing a black outfit and holding a black hat, he also is holding flowers. Some green colouring has been added to the flowers and the cheeks have been tinted pink.

Mill and water wheel. Small buildings at left, house on hill in background. Phoenix flour mill, established 1871. Original mill wheel was 30 feet in diameter and manufactured by Reid and Gray, Oamaru. New wheel, 34 feet in diameter, was erected in 1878 and manufactured by local firm Jack, Steel and Hendry. Wm. Robertson written on back of print.
