John Barclay. Arrived on Silistra, Oamaru, 1862. John Barclay was born in Gourock on the Clyde, Scotland. He died in 1919 aged 83. He came to New Zealand when he was 26 years old and arrived in Port Chalmers in 1862 on the Silistra with his wife and son. Soon after he came to Oamaru he was employed as a building contractor. He built the Queen's Hotel (North Otago Early Settlers' Association, 1993), the first section of St Luke's Church, the Thames Street bridge and Meek's Mill.
