Crewel Embroidery	Butt, Edward (b.1847, d.1911)	1880s	Large framed crewel embroidery of a sailing ship surrounded by flags and topped by a crown with "V R". In a banner at the very top is "ADVANCE NEW ZEALAND". This is surrounded by flowers. Stitched bottom left corner: "Design & work by E. Butt Late Royal Navy". This embroidery won a first prize at the Dunedin Exhibition 1889/90.
British War Medal	McMillan, William (b.1887, d.1977)	Circa 1919	The obverse of this medal shows the uncrowned left-facing profile of King George V by Sir Bertram Mackennal. The reverse of the medal depicts St George on horseback trampling underfoot the eagle shield of the Central Powers, and a skull and cross-bones (the emblems of death). Above, the sun has risen in victory. The figure is mounted on horseback to symbolise man's mind controlling a force of greater strength than his own, and thus alludes to the scientific and mechanical developments and machines which helped to win the war. The ribbon consists of an orange watered centre, with thin stripes of white and black at each side, and borders of royal blue. Awarded to Edward John Weller.

Sword	Firmin & Sons	Circa 1901	Dress sword which belonged to David Mickle Jack who was the model for the Boer War memorial in Thames Street. A = Leather and metal sheath. Very good condition. Metal at bottom as well as around neck B = Sword. Pattern on sword has a sunburst and a crown as well as ER vii. Hand guard also has crown and ERvii. "David Jack was born in Oamaru in 1878. He learned to ride at a very early age and became an expert horseman before leaving for the Boer War". "Jack was also chosen, among others, to represent New Zealand at the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902. He died in Auckland in 1963 aged 85. David Jack's photograph was sent to Italy where the statue was carved. Mr Jack does not really know why his grandfather was chosen for the statue, but guesses it may have been because of his height, which was six foot three inches (1.9m). (Oamaru Mail 8-2-06)
Table Decoration with Hair Flowers	Bee, Mary Bryce (b.1870, d.1899)	1895	A floral, Victorian table decoration. It is an example of a then popular craft, consisting of flowers made from human hair. The flowers and foliage are constructed by wrapping the hair around pieces of wire and then shaping it. Typically the hair was boiled first. A variety of different coloured hair has been used and some of the flowers also have beaded details. Coloured thread has been used in places to hold the hair to the lengths of metal wire. The arrangement is on a yellow satin base and is then contained within a glass dome with a wooden base. This item was made by Mrs R. McDowell (nee Mary Bryce Bee) of Weston, North Otago in 1895. At this time she would have been around 25 years. She died aged 29 very soon after the birth of her only child, Horace Bee McDowell.

T Brookes on horse, holding stock whip. Duncan Bisset on cart at right. Dog sitting near cart. Pig heads on both carts. Man in doorway of Shamrock Hotel. A & D Bisset occupied the corner shop from about 1893 to 1896. Family Grocer & Baker - the grocer's shop next door vacant at time of photograph (owned by J McDowell in the 1880s). Beyond were the premises of M McLoughlin, Dress & Mantle Maker (until 1897). The Shamrock Hotel at right was built in 1873; the licence was refused in 1893. This was later a boarding house.
