Thames Street facing south		Circa 1876	View from Wear Street corner. Includes Booth and Co., general store, D Murray, bootmaker, J Familton, grocer. A right-of-way leads to Christopher Galbraith's office and timber yard; three-storied building is London House, built 1874 for R Gabites, draper. The next building is the Imperial Hotel. Blocks of Oamaru stone on street being used for construction of Waitaki House for J H Milligan, draper, whose premises opened in 1876.

This building first occupied by H J Burton, stationer in 1875, who had portrait rooms at the rear of the premises. When Rule succeeded Burton in 1878, F Smith operated the the studio at the rear and continued under the name of The Oamaru Portrait Gallery. A direction sign is shown in the photograph fastened to the wall of Waitaki House. New shops were built for J S Dalzel in 1887 and were occupied by tenants. Brown's Tea Rooms once occupied this position which is now the location of State Insurance.

A & D Bisset occupied the corner shop from about 1893 to 1896. Family Grocer & Baker - the grocer's shop next door vacant at time of photograph (owned by J McDowell in the 1880s). Beyond were the premises of M McLoughlin, Dress & Mantle Maker (until 1897). The Shamrock Hotel at right was built in 1873; the licence was refused in 1893. This was later a boarding house.
