The grave of James Saunders-Loder - "Jimmy the Needle".

Memorial stone for James Saunders-Loder (also known as James Saunders) at Georgetown cemetery. James Saunders-Loder - known as Jimmy the Needle - was a whaler at Moeraki, one of the first European settlers in the Waitaki Valley and later the ferryman on the Waitaki River. Mr Saunders-Loder drowned while crossing the river with Dr T Williams, Dr Williams survived. The accident happened on the 28th December1862, the day of the birth of Mr Saunders-Loder's second son with wife Elizabeth (nee Wixon). The inscription on the stone cannot be read from this photograph, but is "James Saunders-Loder. Jimmy the Needle. Drowned 1862".
