(The buildings containing the above were built in 1876, the northern [Waitaki House] a few months before southern) R.L. Rule, stationer; T. Falconer, furniture; W.H. Cottrell, fancy goods (two storeyed). [These three shops were removed and others built 1887] A. Headland, grocer; J. Bulleid & Co, drapers. Beyond can be seen Waterloo House, the Imperial Hotel, and the three- storeyed London House, occupied at the time by R Gabites, draper.
