Tin Trunk		1890s	A small tin trunk used to hold documents. This trunk belonged to Sir John McKenzie, Palmerston. The trunk has a handle at each end. The trunk is lockable, though there is no key with it. The exterior of the trunk is painted black. "Hon. John McKenzie" is painted in white on the trunk's lid. The interior of the trunk is painted red.
Oamaru Harbour Board Chairman's Chair		Circa 1874	Oamaru Harbour Board Chairman's chair. Large wooden chair with a high back. Four legs, each with a castor on the end. The seat, back and arms are padded with brown leather. The arms and back are ornately carved.
Bracelet	Jackson Brothers	1882 1884	Sterling silver cuff bracelet. Oval shape, hinged at one side and the other has a small button which when pressed opens the bracelet. Front has small round projections on both sides. Scrolls and sprigs of leaves engraved. Raised scroll work is inlaid with rose gold. In the centre is an engraved branch with little leaves while larger leaves are inlaid and with rose gold and yellow gold. The back is plain but is engraved 'Presented to MISS S A SPEDDING - from the teachers of North School- OAMARU April 1884'. Three lots of hallmarks lion and t, the mark for Chester and a J.B.S. These marks indicate the piece is sterling silver, manufactured in Chester, England, in 1882.
Crimean War Medal		1854	Crimean War medal. The medal consists of a silver disk with, on the obverse, the diademed head of Queen Victoria and the legend VICTORIA REGINA with the date 1854 below. The reverse has a depiction of a standing Roman warrior about to receive a laurel crown from a flying figure of victory, the word CRIMEA appearing on the left. The medal is notable for its unusually ornate clasps. Each is in the form of an oak leaf with an acorn at each end, a style not used on any other British medal. The clasps are named, from the top: Sebastopol, Inkerman, Alma'. The ornate, floriated, swivelling suspender is also unique to the Crimea Medal. The ribbon is discoloured but was originally pale blue with yellow edges. On the edge is 'Peter Fitgerald 2285 REGT'. Belonged to Peter Fitzgerald or Fitgerald, of Georgetown. Peter died on 4 December 1887 aged 55. He was from Kildare, Ireland and is buried in the Georgetown cemetery. Peter's widow was looked after by Mary McAuley, a young local girl. Mary was given this medal by the widow. Mary later married and became Mary McPhie.
Cheese Keep	Philip Ashberry and Sons	1896	A silver-plated cheese keep. Presented to J.H. Milligan, tailor, following the voluntary payment of his debts after his bankruptcy in 1885. A - Silver-plated dish of keep 4 legs and decoration on edges. "BRITANNIA. PHILIP ASHBERRY AND SONS. SHEFFIELD 921 M" B - Silver-plated lid "TO J. H. MILLIGAN, AS A MARK OF APPRECIATION OF COMMERCIAL INTEGRITY. 1896." Ornate handle.
Fan		1890s	Ostrich feather fan with 16 mother of pearl supports. A taxidermied hummingbird is attached to the fan. A cream coloured tassel attached to the handle. This fan belonged to Agnes Reid of Elderslie Estate.
Military Tunic		1880s	A military tunic. Part of George Sumpter's full dress uniform as a local volunteer.
Microscope Set		1880s	Brass binocular microscope with wooden case. This microscope was used by museum curator Thomas Forrester to view diatoms. Pieces as follows: A - Rectangular wooden box (with no lid) that has a handle on one of the long side. The interior has compartments for the various pieces of the microscope. B - Base of the microscope. Brass. Two main supporting legs joined by a rectangular flat section with a lens in the centre. Joined to the front of the rectangular section is a circular tube with a rectangular base on top of it. On either side is a large knob which together raise and lower the screw for attaching the eyepiece. There is a fastening knob on it. Attached to the bottom of the circular tube is a mirror on a swivel. C - Eyepieces consisting of two circular tubes which meet at the bottom and are joined to a base which slots onto B. Also on the base is a lens. D - Piece of tube consisting of two sections, one slightly larger than the other. E - Lens consisting of two sections, one slightly larger than the other. F - Same as E. G - Canister for a lens "1/12 INCH". H - Lid for canister G "HOMOGENEOUS IMMERSION 1/12 INCH WATSON & SONS 313 HIGH HOLBORN LONDON". I - Lens "1/12 IN. HOMOG: IMMN" and "1.25 N.A.". J - Canister for lens. K - Lid for canister J. "2 Inch". L - Lens.
Chair	Yardley, Walter John (b.1842, d.1877)	1866	Wooden chair with solid seat and shows some green paint. Made by Walter J. Yardley, 1866 at Palmerston. Made of Totara or rimu.
Keystone		Circa 1882	A figural keystone in the form of a bearded man. Mounted on a wooden backing. Originally from an internal arch in the 1882 Waitaki County Council building on Thames Street, Oamaru.
Microscope Preparation Items		1880s	Items used to prepare microscope slides, especially diatom slides. They are as follows: Circular cardboard canister of filament like objects 'bristles' on label, contains rats whiskers used to move diatoms when mounting microscope slides. Tissue wrapped bundle of seven pieces of gauze like material of different sizes and one piece of dark coloured velvet. Glass dish with lid. Three white and one cream chine dishes. Purple cardboard box and contents "1 OZ MICROSCOPIC GLASS CIRCLES 1 1/8 In. No. 1". Green cardboard box and contents "THIN GLASS 1g No 1 5/8" R & J BECK LONDON & PHILADELPHIA". Red cardboard box and contents "No. 1 MICRO. COVERS 7/8" CIRCLES 1/2 OUNCE". Tracing wheel. Four objects, possibly wax, with a picture of a bull in the centre and "FABRICANTES ULLATHORNE & CO LONDRES" around the edge. Two pieces of metal rod welded together.
Box of Diatom Slides		1880s	Wooden box of diatom microscope slides. Some slides labelled with species names and diagrams. The box is hinged at the back with two hook catches at the front. The section with the catches on it is also hinged and lowers down flat. The contents are as follows.: A six slide holder with three slides one of which is broken. A six slide holder with six slides four of which are labelled. A six slide holder with six slides all of which are labelled. A six slide holder with six slides none of which are labelled. Box of Diatom Slides		Circa 1889	Wooden box of diatom microscope slides. The box is hinged at the back and has a hook and eye catch at the front. The front section with the hook on it is also hinged and lowers down. The contents of the box from the bottom up is as follows: An empty double slide holder. A double slide holder with slides "Diatoms Troublesome Gully Oamaru" and "Diatom Forrester's. A double slide holder with slides "Diatoms 14" and "6'. A double slide holder with slides "Diatom W B Oamaru Feb 89" and "Diatom W B Oamaru Feb 89". An empty double slide holder.
Military Trousers		1880s	Military trousers. Black with gold stripes down outside leg, with black buttons. Part of George Sumpter's full dress uniform as a local volunteer.
Wedding Ensemble - Skirt and Jacket		1871	A skirt and jacket. Worn in 1871 when Martha McNab married Robert Gray at Pukeuri. A = Skirt. Brown striped taffeta, with cotton tape waistband. The material is a light chestnut with vertical stripes of dark brown flanked by gold. At the bottom is attached a 110mm wide ruffle of material which has been press pleated ( ie it has not been sewn ). At the very edge of the skirt is a burgundy cotton tape. There is one side pocket. The skirt has two metal hooks and eyes on the waist band, but that is all, there does not appear to have been any fastening. Lined with a hay coloured starched cotton. B = Jacket. Rather long jacket, with a pulled in waist. The jacket is of the same material as the skirt, with brown velvet insets. There is an hour glass panel along the back. The collar is velvet, as are the inverted cuffs. The front panel is also velvet, a wider hour glass than the back. The front is fastened by two hooks and eyes at the collar and twelve wooden buttons. The jacket is lined with a brown cotton. The interior has a cotton tie.
Bullock Yoke		1890	A wooden cattle yoke used at Windsor Park, North Otago. Displayed in Centennial Procession at Oamaru in 1963.

Accordion		1880s	Small button accordion. Black wooden facings, brown card frame with white paper bellows. The metal corners have 'Registered EMPRESS ACCORDEON Made in Germany Schutmark [swan] registered' One side has two metal stops while the other has 10 black buttons which are attached to wooden levers, like piano keys. On this side is the Swan and Handel Fabrik marker. Belonged to William Wilson who was born in 1852 in Minto, Scotland. When he came out to NZ he spent much of his life around Maerewhenua gold mining. He was very musical.
