Turning first sod of the Waitaki-Moeraki railway

"Turning 1st Sod Railway 1873". Oamaru Mayor Dr Wait turns the first sod of the Waitaki-Moeraki railway, 10 March, 1873. The ceremony was held near the position of the first railway station at the foot of Wansbeck Street. The occasion was celebrated by a public holiday and a procession to the spot where Dr Wait carried out the time-honoured ritual. A bullock was roasted and devoured by those at the site and there was a public dinner later. Cape Wanbrow. Surfboat landing site.
