Wreck of the Ariadne

The Ariadne, wrecked a few miles south of the mouth of the Waitaki River 24 March 1901. Built in 1874 (230 tons reg), the Ariadne had a crew of twelve who escaped safely.
On 31 October 1901, Captain George Mumford, T C Kerry (owner) and E J H Freke were charged in Christchurch Magistrates Court with casting the ship away and conspiring to defraud the insurance underwriter, Lloyds. (See McDonald, 1940 172-174.) |
