Stan Jenkins (boxer) wearing Jamieson Belt with trainer Joe Thwaites. Stan died after a bout with Vic Caltaux at Petone to compete for the vacant professional welter weight championship. Account of match was in Oamaru Mail 5 March 1940. He was hit on his cauliflower ear, just near end of match. He rose to his feet but was groggy. He was taken to the ambulance by stretcher. Later that night he was listed as having concussion and condition very low. Obituary on 7th When he died he held N Z middle weight and light heavyweight championship. He was 23. At Waitaki he started boxing (at 17) and also was a sprinter and footballer. After school he joined Excelsior Football club and until 2 years ago lived in Oamaru. Brother Norman in NZEF at time of death.
