Phoenix Flour Mill (Old Mill Road off Chelmer Street). This business was established in 1871. Owned by Spence and Grave from 1872. The original water-wheel was 30 feet in diameter and manufactured by Reid and Gray, Oamaru. Mill was sold to Lewis Morton in 1878. New water-wheel erected in 1878. It was 34 feet in diameter and manufactured by the local firm of Jack, Steel and Hendry.
