Captain John Mainland, captain of the Oamaru Fire Brigade. A native of Lerwick in the Shetland Islands, Captain Mainland came to New Zealand on the ship "Three Bells" in 1858 and first stopped at Dunedin. After a year he came to Oamaru and opened in business as a carpenter and builder.
