Wreck of the Ariadne

The Ariadne, wrecked a few miles south of the mouth of the Waitaki River 24 March, 1901. Built in 1874 (230 tons reg) the Ariadne had a crew of 12 who escaped safely. On 31 October 1901, George Mumford (Captain), T. C. Kerry (owner) and E.J.H.Freke were charged in Christchurch Magistrate's court with casting the ship away and conspiting to defraud the insurance underwriter, Lloyds.
