Victory Medal	McMillan, William (b.1887, d.1977)	Circa 1919	The obverse of the medal depicts the standing figure of Victory holding a palm branch in her right hand and stretching out her left hand. On the reverse of the medal is a laurel wreath containing a four-line inscription: "THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1914-1919". The dates are '1914-1919' to include post-war intervention by the Allied nations in the Russian Civil War. The medal is yellow bronze and is attached to the ribbon by a ring. The ribbon is watered silk with a double rainbow, with indigo at the edges and red in the centre. On edge - "63305 PTE. J. W. Cowan. N.Z.E.F." Originally on display at Early Settlers Association with portrait of John Cowan, World War One memorial plaque (Dead Man's Penny) and accompanying printed note from King George V.
1914-15 Star Medal	Blakemore, William Henry James (b.1871, d.1945)	Circa 1918	The 1914-15 Star is a crowned four-pointed star with crossed swords and a wreath of oak leaves, with the royal cypher at the foot and a central scroll inscribed 1914-15. The 1914-15 Star is identical to the 1914 Star, except for the omission of AUG and NOV, and the scroll across the centre being inscribed 1914-15. The reverse of the 1914-15 Star is plain, except for the inscribed name and service details of the recipient. The medal is bronze and is attached to the ribbon by a ring. The ribbon is watered silk with red, white and blue stripes. This is the same ribbon as that worn on the 1914 Star. Issued to -: 6/2485 Capt. J.P. Hewat, N.Z.E.F.

Died Oamaru Hospital 26th May 1985, buried Oamaru Lawn Cemetery. After the war he farmed in Kyeburn and then 1939 - 1985 he lived at Herbert (in old Presbyterian manse). He was a hen farmer and bee keeper. Note: Ribbon accessioned with this medal is the ribbon for the Victory Medal so it is the incorrect ribbon for this medal.

From the left: This bronze six-pointed star has a circular centre with the GRI/VI monogram, surmounted by the Royal crown, and inscribed 'The 1939-1945 Star'. The ribbon has three equal vertical stripes of dark blue, red and light blue. The dark blue stripe symbolises the service of the Navy and the Merchant Navy, the red stripe symbolises the service of the Army, and the light blue stripe symbolises the service of the Air Force. This bronze six-pointed star has a circular centre with the GRI/VI monogram, surmounted by the Royal crown, and inscribed THE AFRICA STAR. The ribbon is pale buff in colour, with a central vertical red stripe, and narrower stripes, one dark blue and the other light blue. The pale buff background symbolises the desert, the central red stripe symbolises the Army, the dark blue stripe symbolises the Navy and Merchant Navy, and the light blue stripe symbolises the Air Force. The War Medal 1939-1945. Silver. On the obverse of this medal is the effigy of King George VI. On the reverse is a triumphant lion trampling on a dragon symbolising the Axis powers. The ribbon is the red, white, and blue of the (British) Union Flag. There is a narrow central red stripe with a narrow white stripe on either side. There are broad red stripes at either edge, the two intervening stripes being blue. The New Zealand War Service Medal. Silver. The obverse shows the uncrowned effigy of King George VI, facing left, with the legend "GEORGIUS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP." The obverse of the medal depicts a Royal Crown superimposed over a crossed sword and sceptre and surrounded by fern fronds. The reverse bears the inscription FOR LONG AND EFFICIENT SERVICE. The medal's suspension is a ring, which passes through a loop fixed to the top of the piece.The medal is suspended from a crimson ribbon. Capt J M Forrester, Queen's Rifles, Vol (1901).
Crimean War Medal		1854	Crimean War medal. The medal consists of a silver disk with, on the obverse, the diademed head of Queen Victoria and the legend VICTORIA REGINA with the date 1854 below. The reverse has a depiction of a standing Roman warrior about to receive a laurel crown from a flying figure of victory, the word CRIMEA appearing on the left. The medal is notable for its unusually ornate clasps. Each is in the form of an oak leaf with an acorn at each end, a style not used on any other British medal. The clasps are named, from the top: Sebastopol, Inkerman, Alma'. The ornate, floriated, swivelling suspender is also unique to the Crimea Medal. The ribbon is discoloured but was originally pale blue with yellow edges. On the edge is 'Peter Fitgerald 2285 REGT'. Belonged to Peter Fitzgerald or Fitgerald, of Georgetown. Peter died on 4 December 1887 aged 55. He was from Kildare, Ireland and is buried in the Georgetown cemetery. Peter's widow was looked after by Mary McAuley, a young local girl. Mary was given this medal by the widow. Mary later married and became Mary McPhie.

The medal's suspension is a ring, which passes through a loop fixed to the top of the piece.The medal is suspended from a ribbon crimson in colour with two central white stripes (this medal would have originally been issued with a plain crimson ribbon.) Engraved around the rim of the medal is "No 79 Sert. Robt Munro. Nth Dunedin Rifle Vols. (1901). North Dunedin Rifle Volunteers Medal.
Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal		Circa 1860s	The medal was struck in silver and is a disk. The obverse depicts a Trophy of Arms that incorporates a central shield bearing the Royal Coat of Arms. The reverse of the medal is smooth with a raised rim and bears the inscription "FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT" in four straight lines in the centre. The ribbon is plain crimson. Engraved on the side is 2292 SergT. Saml. King, 70th Regt.
Volunteer Long Service Medal		1898	The Volunteer Long Service Medal in silver with a raised rim on each side. It is suspended from a straight swivelling silver bar, affixed to the medal by means of a claw and a pin through the upper edge of the medal. The obverse of the medal depicts the effigy of Queen Victoria wearing the Crown, a veil and the Star of the Order of the Garter. The effigy is circumscribed "VICTORIA REGINA". The reverse shows a palm and laurel wreath that supports a scrolled banner bearing the inscription "FOR LONG SERVICE IN THE VOLUNTEER FORCE" in four lines. Engraved on the rim is "Donald Reid, Late Captain Bruce Rifle Vols 1898."
Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers' Decoration - miniature		1913-1952	The decoration is an oval skeletal design struck in silver, with parts of the obverse in silver-gilt. It is suspended by a thin silver wire suspension bar which is attached to a small ring at the top on the reverse. The obverse is an oval silver band, inscribed "COLONIAL AUXILIARY FORCES" and with the Royal Cypher of King George V. The oval is surmounted by an Imperial Crown. The ribbon is dark green.
