Tin Trunk

A small tin trunk used to hold documents. This trunk belonged to Sir John McKenzie, Palmerston. The trunk has a handle at each end. The trunk is lockable, though there is no key with it. The exterior of the trunk is painted black. "Hon. John McKenzie" is painted in white on the trunk's lid. The interior of the trunk is painted red.

Victory Medal

The obverse of the medal depicts the standing figure of Victory holding a palm branch in her right hand and stretching out her left hand. On the reverse of the medal is a laurel wreath containing a four-line inscription: "THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1914-1919". The dates are '1914-1919' to include post-war intervention by the Allied nations in the Russian Civil War. The medal is yellow bronze and is attached to the ribbon by a ring.
The ribbon is watered silk with a double rainbow, with indigo at the edges and red in the centre. On edge - "63305 PTE. J. W. Cowan. N.Z.E.F." Originally on display at Early Settlers Association with portrait of John Cowan, World War One memorial plaque (Dead Man's Penny) and accompanying printed note from King George V. |
