Victory Medal	McMillan, William (b.1887, d.1977)	Circa 1919	The obverse of the medal depicts the standing figure of Victory holding a palm branch in her right hand and stretching out her left hand. On the reverse of the medal is a laurel wreath containing a four-line inscription: "THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1914-1919". The dates are '1914-1919' to include post-war intervention by the Allied nations in the Russian Civil War. The medal is yellow bronze and is attached to the ribbon by a ring. The ribbon is watered silk with a double rainbow, with indigo at the edges and red in the centre. Around the edge is engraved :1 641 PTE. R.S. MITCHELL 16 BN. A.I.F".

The reverse of the medal depicts St George on horseback trampling underfoot the eagle shield of the Central Powers, and a skull and cross-bones (the emblems of death). Above, the sun has risen in victory. The figure is mounted on horseback to symbolise man's mind controlling a force of greater strength than his own, and thus alludes to the scientific and mechanical developments and machines which helped to win the war. On the side is "5894 PTE W.L. Mitchell. 27 - BN.A.I.F."
Africa Star Medal		Circa 1945	This bronze six-pointed star has a circular centre with the GRI/VI monogram, surmounted by the Royal crown, and inscribed 'THE AFRICA STAR'. The ribbon is pale buff in colour, with a central vertical red stripe, and narrower stripes, one dark blue and the other light blue. The pale buff background symbolises the desert, the central red stripe symbolises the Army, the dark blue stripe symbolises the Navy and Merchant Navy, and the light blue stripe symbolises the Air Force. The clasp on the ribbon is for the 8th Army. On verso is '63718 - GNR H J BENSON' Enclosed is a 35mm colour slide and a print of that image, of the headstone at H J Benson's grave.

The obverse shows the uncrowned effigy of King George VI, facing left, with the legend "GEORGIUS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP." The reverse has the inscription "FOR SERVICE TO NEW ZEALAND 1939-1945" above a fern leaf. Ribbon black with white edges. Awarded to Ivan McDonald who was in the 19th Independant Infantry Co.

Issued to Stanley Frederick Bartrum. Number 25177 Private 2nd Battalion 8th Southland Regiment 1st NZEF. Born Kurow 10 February 1895 married Gladys May Townsley 1924 at St Luke’s. Died Oamaru Hospital 26th May 1985, buried Oamaru Lawn Cemetery. After the war he farmed in Kyeburn and then 1939 - 1985 he lived at Herbert (in old Presbyterian manse). He was a hen farmer and bee keeper. Note: Ribbon accessioned with this medal is the ribbon for the Victory Medal so it is the incorrect ribbon for this medal.

War Medal 1939-1945		Circa 1945 1939-1945	The War Medal 1939-1945. Silver. On the obverse of this medal is the effigy of King George VI. On the reverse is a triumphant lion trampling on a dragon symbolising the Axis powers. The ribbon is the red, white, and blue of the (British) Union Flag. There is a narrow central red stripe with a narrow white stripe on either side. There are broad red stripes at either edge, the two intervening stripes being blue. Medal issued to William Nisbet.
Crimean War Medal		1854	Crimean War medal. The medal consists of a silver disk with, on the obverse, the diademed head of Queen Victoria and the legend VICTORIA REGINA with the date 1854 below. The reverse has a depiction of a standing Roman warrior about to receive a laurel crown from a flying figure of victory, the word CRIMEA appearing on the left. The medal is notable for its unusually ornate clasps. Each is in the form of an oak leaf with an acorn at each end, a style not used on any other British medal. The clasps are named, from the top: Sebastopol, Inkerman, Alma'. The ornate, floriated, swivelling suspender is also unique to the Crimea Medal. The ribbon is discoloured but was originally pale blue with yellow edges. On the edge is 'Peter Fitgerald 2285 REGT'. Belonged to Peter Fitzgerald or Fitgerald, of Georgetown. Peter died on 4 December 1887 aged 55. He was from Kildare, Ireland and is buried in the Georgetown cemetery. Peter's widow was looked after by Mary McAuley, a young local girl. Mary was given this medal by the widow. Mary later married and became Mary McPhie.
Silver Jubilee Medal 1935		Circa 1935	A silver medal with attached loop and ribbon. The obverse features conjoined half-length busts of King George V and Queen Mary wearing crowns and robes of state; around, GEORGE . V . AND . QUEEN . MARY . MAY . VI . MCMXXXV. The reverse has a crowned monogram GRI (Translation - George King and Emperor) with the dates of his reign at either side, MAY 6 1910 May 6 1935. The ribbon is purple with three narrow stripes of dark blue, white, and dark blue at each edge. This medal was presented to W.H. Frith, a former Mayor of Oamaru.
Cross of Mercy 1912 Medal		1913	A medal issued in 1913 after The Balkan War. A = Gilt Maltese cross with red enamel circle to centre. On one side is what looks like the Serbian Royal Arms, and eagle with fleur de lis beneath and on the reverse is Cyrillic writing "‘For Mercy’ circumscribed ‘For Tending the Wounded and the Sick 1912’". B = Triangular folded piece of pale blue moiré ribbon.

New Zealand Long and Efficient Service Medal		1901	The medal is round and made of silver. The obverse of the medal depicts a Royal Crown superimposed over a crossed sword and sceptre and surrounded by fern fronds. The reverse bears the inscription FOR LONG AND EFFICIENT SERVICE. The medal's suspension is a ring, which passes through a loop fixed to the top of the piece.The medal is suspended from a ribbon crimson in colour with two central white stripes (this medal would have originally been issued with a plain crimson ribbon.) Engraved around the rim of the medal is "No 79 Sert. Robt Munro. Nth Dunedin Rifle Vols. (1901). North Dunedin Rifle Volunteers Medal.
Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers' Decoration - miniature		1913-1952	The decoration is an oval skeletal design struck in silver, with parts of the obverse in silver-gilt. It is suspended by a thin silver wire suspension bar which is attached to a small ring at the top on the reverse. The obverse is an oval silver band, inscribed "COLONIAL AUXILIARY FORCES" and with the Royal Cypher of King George V. The oval is surmounted by an Imperial Crown. The ribbon is dark green.
New Zealand Medal		Circa 1865	The medal is silver, circular, with a straight bar suspender ornamented with New Zealand fern fronds. The obverse shows an effigy of Queen Victoria, facing left and wearing a diadem and veil, with the legend: VICTORIA D: G: BRITT : REG : F : D. The reverse has a laurel wreath "NEW ZEALAND // VIRTUTIS HONOR" " 1863 // TO // 1865". The ribbon is blue with a red centre stripe. Around the edge is engraved "2292. SERGT. SAML. KING 70TH REGT."

North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association Medal		1882	Silver medal. The obverse has a pig, a horse, cows, and sheep. On the reverse is "North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Otago Instituted 1863", around the sides and within two wheat sheaves, Awarded - to - H Edwards - for - best - Gordon Setter - 1882.
Dux Medal		1889	Silver Dux Medal. In the shape of a Maltese cross. The back of the medal is engraved "SOUTH SCHOOL OAMARU" The front centre is engraved LILLIE MORELEY DUX 1889. Lillie Moreley started school on the 21/9/1881 and finished 25/2/1892. The medal can be hung or worn like a badge. The pin is missing and the keeper is bent. There are two pieces of correspondence with the medal.
