In 1900 sailed with NZ Mounted Rifles to South Africa (Boer War), 5th contingent. In 1901 returned to South Africa as Captain of D Squadron 9th Contingent NZMR until Boer war ended 1902. Only son of George and Agnes Marshall of Otepopo (Herbert).
