Torpedo boat, harbour, 1886. Built in Dunedin and took part in the mock battle. The torpedo which was fired in Oamaru was suspended out the side of the boat from the spur shown on the deck, which can be seen in the photograph.

Breakwater Construction

Building the breakwater, 1874. Preparation - mainly land reclamation at the shore end - began in 1871. First block laid 10 September 1872. Large crane (built by Kincaid and McQueen) arrived 3 August 1873. Railway line to the breakwater completed 1873. By 1874 length of breakwater completed to 300 feet. Labelled Forrester Estate
