Lieutenant E.Denis Blundell. Head and shoulders portrait in military uniform. Sir Denis distinguished himself as a cricketer. He played in the North Otago team against New South Wales while at the school in the 1920s. He also played in the Cambridge University team. Sir Denis also distinguished himself as an athlete and won the Victoria League Essay in 1926. As an old boy Sir Denis has distinguished himself with many honours. These include G.C.M.G, G.C.V.O., K.B.E., O.B.E. (Military) Q.S.O., Kt. St. John. He was a barrister and solicitor, New Zealand High Commissioner to London, 1968-72 and Governor General of New Zealand 1972-77. He was chairman and director of a number of New Zealand companies, President of the New Zealand Cricket Council 1959-60, Chairman of the Air Services' Licensing Authority 1952-62. The obverse of this medal shows the uncrowned left-facing profile of King George V by Sir Bertram Mackennal. The reverse of the medal depicts St George on horseback trampling underfoot the eagle shield of the Central Powers, and a skull and cross-bones (the emblems of death). Above, the sun has risen in victory. The figure is mounted on horseback to symbolise man's mind controlling a force of greater strength than his own, and thus alludes to the scientific and mechanical developments and machines which helped to win the war.

Around the edge is 'E E BOOTH YMCA'.

The obverse of the medal depicts the standing figure of Victory holding a palm branch in her right hand and stretching out her left hand. On the reverse of the medal is a laurel wreath containing a four-line inscription: "THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1914-1919". The dates are '1914-1919' to include post-war intervention by the Allied nations in the Russian Civil War. The medal is yellow bronze and is attached to the ribbon by a ring.

The ribbon is watered silk with a double rainbow, with indigo at the edges and red in the centre.

Around the edge is engraved :1 641 PTE. R.S. MITCHELL 16 BN. A.I.F".

The 1914 Star is a crowned four-pointed star with crossed swords and a wreath of oak leaves, with the royal cypher at the foot and a central scroll inscribed "AUG NOV 1914". The reverse of the 1914 Star is plain, except for the inscribed name and service details of the recipient. The medal is bronze and is attached to the ribbon by a ring.

The ribbon is watered silk with red, white and blue stripes. This is the same ribbon as that worn on the 1914-15 Star.

This bronze six-pointed star has a circular centre with the GRI/VI monogram, surmounted by the Royal crown, and inscribed 'THE AFRICA STAR'. The ribbon is pale buff in colour, with a central vertical red stripe, and narrower stripes, one dark blue and the other light blue. The pale buff background symbolises the desert, the central red stripe symbolises the Army, the dark blue stripe symbolises the Navy and Merchant Navy, and the light blue stripe symbolises the Air Force.

The clasp on the ribbon is for the 8th Army.

On verso is '63718 - GNR H J BENSON'

Enclosed is a 35mm colour slide and a print of that image, of the headstone at H J Benson's grave.

The War Medal 1939-1945. Silver. On the obverse of this medal is the effigy of King George VI. On the reverse is a triumphant lion trampling on a dragon symbolising the Axis powers. The ribbon is the red, white, and blue of the (British) Union Flag. There is a narrow central red stripe with a narrow white stripe on either side. There are broad red stripes at either edge, the two intervening stripes being blue.

Crimean War medal. The medal consists of a silver disk with, on the obverse, the diademed head of Queen Victoria and the legend VICTORIA REGINA with the date 1854 below. The reverse has a depiction of a standing Roman warrior about to receive a laurel crown from a flying figure of victory, the word CRIMEA appearing on the left.

The medal is notable for its unusually ornate clasps. Each is in the form of an oak leaf with an acorn at each end, a style not used on any other British medal. The clasps are named, from the top: Sebastopol, Inkerman, Alma'. The ornate, floriated, swivelling suspender is also unique to the Crimea Medal.

The ribbon is discoloured but was originally pale blue with yellow edges.

On the edge is 'Peter Fitgerald 2285 REGT'.

Belonged to Peter Fitzgerald or Fitgerald, of Georgetown. Peter died on 4 December 1887 aged 55. He was from Kildare, Ireland and is buried in the Georgetown cemetery. Peter's widow was looked after by Mary McAuley, a young local girl. Mary was given this medal by the widow. Mary later married and became Mary McPhie.

A silver medal with attached loop and ribbon. The obverse features conjoined half-length busts of King George V and Queen Mary wearing crowns and robes of state; around, GEORGE . V . AND . QUEEN . MARY . MAY . VI . MCMXXXV. The reverse has a crowned monogram GRI (Translation - George King and Emperor) with the dates of his reign at either side, MAY 6 1910 May 6 1935.

The ribbon is purple with three narrow stripes of dark blue, white, and dark blue at each edge.

This medal was presented to W.H. Frith, a former Mayor of Oamaru.

The Queen's South Africa Medal. Silver. The obverse shows a crowned and veiled effigy of Queen Victoria, facing left, with the legend "VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX" around the upper perimeter. The reverse shows Britannia holding the Union Flag in her left hand and a laurel wreath in her right hand. In the right background are troops marching inland from the coast. In the left background are two men-of-war, with Neptune's Trident and Britannia's shield on the ground in the foreground. Around the top perimeter are the words "SOUTH AFRICA".

The ribbon has a red band, a dark blue band, repeated in reverse order and separated by a orange band.

Clasps on ribbon state 'Transvaal' 'Rhodesia' 'Cape Colony'.

Engraved on edge is '1687 Trpr. R Searle New Zealand MR.'

A = Gilt Maltese cross with red enamel circle to centre. On one side is what looks like the Serbian Royal Arms, and eagle with fleur de lis beneath and on the reverse is Cyrillic writing "‘For Mercy’ circumscribed ‘For Tending the Wounded and the Sick 1912’".

B = Triangular folded piece of pale blue moiré ribbon.

The obverse depicts the diademed head of a young Queen Victoria with the legend VICTORIA REGINA.
The reverse shows a helmeted Britannia holding a wreath in her right hand and a union shield on her left arm. She is standing in front of a lion. Above is the word INDIA, with the dates 1857-1858 below.
The ribbon is white with two scarlet stripes, with each stripe of equal width.

Engraved around the rim is "2292 SERG.T SAML. KING, 70TH REGT".

The medal is silver, circular, with a straight bar suspender ornamented with New Zealand fern fronds.

The obverse shows an effigy of Queen Victoria, facing left and wearing a diadem and veil, with the legend: VICTORIA D: G: BRITT : REG : F : D.

The reverse has a laurel wreath "NEW ZEALAND // VIRTUTIS HONOR" " 1863 // TO // 1865".

The ribbon is blue with a red centre stripe.

Around the edge is engraved "2292. SERGT. SAML. KING 70TH REGT."

Silver medal, Maltese cross shaped. The centre is a raised circle. Raised on this circle is Oamaru High School Dux 1881. On the back is "HISLOP.”

Attached to the medal is a black ribbon with a silver bar top and bottom. The lower bar is engraved on the edges. In the middle is "George G. Jackson." The top bar is engraved "Presented By James Holmes ESQ" This bar has a long pin slightly bent at the back, this fits into a curved hook.

Silver Dux Medal. In the shape of a Maltese cross. The back of the medal is engraved "SOUTH SCHOOL OAMARU" The front centre is engraved LILLIE MORELEY DUX 1889. Lillie Moreley started school on the 21/9/1881 and finished 25/2/1892. The medal can be hung or worn like a badge. The pin is missing and the keeper is bent.

There are two pieces of correspondence with the medal.
