Clyde Hotel, Hampden
Ries & Co.
1870s
Clyde Hotel, Hampden.
There is a reference to the existence of the Clyde Hotel in 1862, with John Prosser as proprietor. The Cyclopedia of Otago, however, records that it was opened in 1868. This hotel had 12 rooms, with 7 bedrooms. The comfortable dining room could seat 20, and there was also a cosy sitting room. While the Hampden Hotel was the official Cobb and Co. coach stop, it was the Clyde that was attacked by two bushrangers in 1865. Two horses were stolen from their stables and with the fresh mounts they terrorized people as far upland as Kurow before being arrested across the river in Hakataramea. |

W Ross, Accommodation House, Hakataramea
Circa 1880s
Ross' Accomodation House was situated on the east bank of the Waitaki river, about 1.5 miles above the Hakataramea township. The proprietor (right centre) was Mr W O Ross' grandfather. A few hundred yards above this was the punt operated by Mr Ross, which crossed the river the Otago side and was about a mile above the Kurow township. This punt was the only access across the river from Otago to Canterbury, at the time, prior to 1881. After the Kurow bridges were opened in 1881, the use of the punt and the accomodation house vanished. The accomodation house was later destroyed by fire.
