A large decorative glass apothecary jar for display in a chemist shop. Painted brown with polychrome and gold decoration and a gold lid.
Labelled as Peruv. Bark. Decorated with a crown. The jar has the painted motto "honi pense qui mal y soit" Peruvian Bark was a historical name for a remedy used to treat all forms of malaria. Originally displayed in Lanes Chemist Tees Street, Oamaru. |

Lime Product Sample Quicklime

A glass jar with a metal lid containing white powder.
The typewritten label reads: Sample burnt lime or quicklime. Calcium oxide CaO. From McDonald's Oamaru Lime Ltd. Weston. Employs fourteen men. Calcium Carbonated is crushed and mixed with coal and the powder pelletised and then burnt. The coal is burnt out of the pellet and removed CO2 (Aat 950oC) reducing calcium carbonate to calcium oxide. Burnt lime is used for mortar mixes and plastering, and in the manufacture of steel. Approx. 1000-1500 tons are used as burnt lime. Balance of production is converted by addition of water to become hydrated lime. |

The following information is from a note that was donated with the item. Pottery Jar from Murphys Flat Chinese camp near Macraes. These were imported from China usually with Tiger Whiskey, a Chinese rice whiskey. |
