This bronze six-pointed star has a circular centre with the GRI/VI monogram, surmounted by the Royal crown, and inscribed 'THE AFRICA STAR'. The ribbon is pale buff in colour, with a central vertical red stripe, and narrower stripes, one dark blue and the other light blue. The pale buff background symbolises the desert, the central red stripe symbolises the Army, the dark blue stripe symbolises the Navy and Merchant Navy, and the light blue stripe symbolises the Air Force.

The clasp on the ribbon is for the 8th Army.

On verso is '63718 - GNR H J BENSON'

Enclosed is a 35mm colour slide and a print of that image, of the headstone at H J Benson's grave.

From the left: This bronze six-pointed star has a circular centre with the GRI/VI monogram, surmounted by the Royal crown, and inscribed 'The 1939-1945 Star'. The ribbon has three equal vertical stripes of dark blue, red and light blue. The dark blue stripe symbolises the service of the Navy and the Merchant Navy, the red stripe symbolises the service of the Army, and the light blue stripe symbolises the service of the Air Force.

The War Medal 1939-1945. Silver. On the obverse of this medal is the effigy of King George VI. On the reverse is a triumphant lion trampling on a dragon symbolising the Axis powers. The ribbon is the red, white, and blue of the (British) Union Flag. There is a narrow central red stripe with a narrow white stripe on either side. There are broad red stripes at either edge, the two intervening stripes being blue.

The New Zealand War Service Medal. Silver. The obverse shows the uncrowned effigy of King George VI, facing left, with the legend "GEORGIUS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP." The reverse has the inscription "FOR SERVICE TO NEW ZEALAND 1939-1945" above a fern leaf. Ribbon black with white edges.

The medal is round and made of silver. The obverse of the medal depicts a Royal Crown superimposed over a crossed sword and sceptre and surrounded by fern fronds. The reverse bears the inscription FOR LONG AND EFFICIENT SERVICE. The medal's suspension is a ring, which passes through a loop fixed to the top of the piece.The medal is suspended from a ribbon crimson in colour with two central white stripes (this medal would have originally been issued with a plain crimson ribbon.)

Engraved around the rim of the medal is "No 79 Sert. Robt Munro. Nth Dunedin Rifle Vols. (1901). North Dunedin Rifle Volunteers Medal.
