Typed note attached to photo reads: "William Cain, born in the Isle of Man, operated the ferry across the Waitaki River on the site of the Aviemore Dam, in partnership with Mr Christian Hille until 1878, when a high flood washed the ferry away, and it was later found on the beach opposite the Oamaru Gasworks. He then purchased what is now Roseneath, and called it Peveril Terrace. He was buried in the Kurow Cemetery."
