The obverse of this medal shows the uncrowned left-facing profile of King George V by Sir Bertram Mackennal. The reverse of the medal depicts St George on horseback trampling underfoot the eagle shield of the Central Powers, and a skull and cross-bones (the emblems of death). Above, the sun has risen in victory. The figure is mounted on horseback to symbolise man's mind controlling a force of greater strength than his own, and thus alludes to the scientific and mechanical developments and machines which helped to win the war.
Issued to Stanley Frederick Bartrum. Number 25177 Private 2nd Battalion 8th Southland Regiment 1st NZEF. Born Kurow 10 February 1895 married Gladys May Townsley 1924 at St Luke’s. Died Oamaru Hospital 26th May 1985, buried Oamaru Lawn Cemetery. After the war he farmed in Kyeburn and then 1939 - 1985 he lived at Herbert (in old Presbyterian manse). He was a hen farmer and bee keeper. Note: Ribbon accessioned with this medal is the ribbon for the Victory Medal so it is the incorrect ribbon for this medal. |

Ornamental silver cross with straight arms terminating in broad finials, suspended from plain suspension bar. Obverse decorated with imperial crowns, with the Royal Cypher in centre.
Engraved on back is ' Capt Hubert S Harley - Battle of the Somme Sept 21st 1916.' The ribbon consists of three equal vertical moire stripes of white, purple, and white. This Military Cross medal is in the original padded case. Interior - base is cream padded velvet. Top is slightly padded off white sateen. The shape of the medal is cut out of the bottom. Exterior is purple paper that has a rippled effect. Top of the case has a gold outline with a Kings crown in gold in the centre. |

The 1914-15 Star is a crowned four-pointed star with crossed swords and a wreath of oak leaves, with the royal cypher at the foot and a central scroll inscribed 1914-15. The 1914-15 Star is identical to the 1914 Star, except for the omission of AUG and NOV, and the scroll across the centre being inscribed 1914-15. The reverse of the 1914-15 Star is plain, except for the inscribed name and service details of the recipient. The medal is bronze and is attached to the ribbon by a ring.
The ribbon is watered silk with red, white and blue stripes. This is the same ribbon as that worn on the 1914 Star. Engraved on back 'Lieut. F Chilton - A & S Highrs.' Originally from framed collection of medals Bronze star. |

The obverse of the medal depicts the standing figure of Victory holding a palm branch in her right hand and stretching out her left hand. On the reverse of the medal is a laurel wreath containing a four-line inscription: "THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1914-1919". The dates are '1914-1919' to include post-war intervention by the Allied nations in the Russian Civil War. The medal is yellow bronze and is attached to the ribbon by a ring.
The ribbon is watered silk with a double rainbow, with indigo at the edges and red in the centre. 'Capt F N Houston' on rim. |

This bronze six-pointed star has a circular centre with the GRI/VI monogram, surmounted by the Royal crown, and inscribed THE AFRICA STAR. The ribbon is pale buff in colour, with a central vertical red stripe, and narrower stripes, one dark blue and the other light blue. The pale buff background symbolises the desert, the central red stripe symbolises the Army, the dark blue stripe symbolises the Navy and Merchant Navy, and the light blue stripe symbolises the Air Force. The Decorations and War Service Medals of Squadron Leader Arthur Mitchell Paape DFC and Bar, RAF. Pupil at Waitaki BHS 1931 - 34, Killed in Action 3/4/1943 and Flying Officer John Mitchell Paape, pupil at Waitaki BHS 1927 - 32 Master at Waitaki BHS 1937 - 42, Killed in Action 15/10/1942. At top are golden wings. The six medals are, from the left:the Distinguished Flying Cross and bar, 1939-1945 Star, Air Crew Europe Star, the Defence Medal, the War Medal 1939-45, New Zealand War Service Medal. The Distinguished Flying Cross is a cross flory. The horizontal and bottom bars are terminated with bumps, the upper bar with a rose. The decoration's face features aeroplane propellers, superimposed on the vertical arms of the cross, and wings on the horizontal arms. In the centre is a laurel wreath around the RAF monogram, surmounted by a heraldic Imperial Crown. The reverse is plain, except for a central roundel bearing the reigning monarch's cypher. The suspender is straight and decorated with laurel wreaths.The ribbon bar denoting a further award is silver, with the Royal Air Force eagle in its centre. Bars awarded during World War II have the year of award engraved on the reverse. The ribbon is white with purple broad diagonal stripes. The decoration is an oval skeletal design struck in silver, with parts of the obverse in silver-gilt. It is suspended by a thin silver wire suspension bar which is attached to a small ring at the top on the reverse.
The obverse is an oval silver band, inscribed "COLONIAL AUXILIARY FORCES" and with the Royal Cypher "ERI VII" for "Edwardvs Rex Imperator VII" in skeletal form and in silver-gilt in the centre. The oval is surmounted by a silver-gilt Imperial Crown. On reverse '1910 MAJOR JOHN MEGGETT FORRESTER 3RD BATTALION OTAGO RIFLE VOLS'. Silversmith’s marks for London, 1909, makers mark SG. The ribbon is dark green suspended from a silver bar-brooch decorated with an oak leaf pattern. |

A gilt cross patonce (four arms, each arm growing broader and floriated toward the end), with the Imperial Crown to the top arm. On the obverse, in the centre, within a gold circle contains the conjoint bust of King George V and Queen Mary facing left with the motto “FOR GOD AND THE EMPIRE” The reverse has the royal and imperial cyphre GRI surmounted by a crown, the whole enclosed in a cable circle, with a hallmark on the lower arm. The cross is suspended by a crown and a ring. The ribbon is rose-pink flanked by narrow pearl grey edges with a central narrow stripe of pearl grey. Awarded to Dr. Stewart Hunter MB FRCS.Ed. Crimean War Medal

Crimean War medal. The medal consists of a silver disk with, on the obverse, the diademed head of Queen Victoria and the legend VICTORIA REGINA with the date 1854 below. The reverse has a depiction of a standing Roman warrior about to receive a laurel crown from a flying figure of victory, the word CRIMEA appearing on the left.
The medal is notable for its unusually ornate clasps. Each is in the form of an oak leaf with an acorn at each end, a style not used on any other British medal. The clasps are named, from the top: Sebastopol, Inkerman, Alma'. The ornate, floriated, swivelling suspender is also unique to the Crimea Medal. The ribbon is discoloured but was originally pale blue with yellow edges. On the edge is 'Peter Fitgerald 2285 REGT'. Belonged to Peter Fitzgerald or Fitgerald, of Georgetown. Peter died on 4 December 1887 aged 55. He was from Kildare, Ireland and is buried in the Georgetown cemetery. Peter's widow was looked after by Mary McAuley, a young local girl. Mary was given this medal by the widow. Mary later married and became Mary McPhie. |
