Description
Oamaru Confectionery Works, Tees Street, c 1900. Proprietor, H Rice. (The building shown was erected in 1880.) This firm was established in 1885, originally as a wholesale and retail confectionery and bakery business. In October 1897, Mr Rice disposed of his Thames Street retail business and confined himself largely to manufacturing for the trade. He produced a variety of sweets including chocolate creams, jubes, standard mixtures, etc. The works were fitted up with the latest machinery, boilers, etc. The second floor was used for a drying-room, and the front portion of the ground floor for offices and a sample room.
