The photo would have been taken earlier than the 1930s as Maurice O'Connor took over the Redcliff Hotel at Ikawai (with 8 rooms) in 1921. TIMARU HERALD, VOLUME XCVIII, ISSUE 170636, 5 NOVEMBER 1921, PAGE 1. He had come from the Victoria Hotel in .Cromwell and held the Redcliff until September 1923, when Samuel A. Pluck took it over. Pluck also set up a grocery store there. The hotel burned down in the early hours of 29 March 1925. ASHBURTON GUARDIAN, VOLUME XLV, ISSUE 10362, 30 MARCH 1925, PAGE 5. When the holder of the freehold decided not to rebuild, the license lapsed and Pluck moved north to operate the Pier Hotel in Kaikoura.
