Description
"Cutting in the Water Main supplying the Oamaru Borough Council Electric Power House" Oamaru water supply workers, 1917. Left to right: Tom Gilligan, J McNarry, Henry Ross. Man on extreme right: Mr Fraser, reservoir supervisor.
The photograph shows the giant valve cut in to the twin water mains from the Oamaru reservoir. The junction at the foot of Warren Street converged the 18 inch and 24 inch mains into a single 3 foot water main constructed of wood encircled by iron hoops. The main, rose over the hospital hill and dropped down to the power house in Cross St. Second from the right is Mr Ike Dalmer, resident borough engineer, Mr F Black (Wellington) at the right David Nimmo, Borough Engineer. Two in from the left, at back, is Mr Jack Branthwaite (late Town Clerk) and in the group at the front is Mr Jack McNarry (blacksmith) with Mr Alex Ross to the right.
