Description
Charles Adams' gold mining claim at Maerewhenua, early 1900s. The photograph shows the sluicing gun in action. Water for sluicing was obtained from streams in the vicinity and directed into a holding dam above the claim by way of man-made races and siphons (=18 inch pipes) cut around the side of the hills, thus giving a sufficient head of water. Lewis Adams, cousin.
